Ruthless and powerful, King Edward has unquestioningly crushed all Scottish resistance, hanging William Wallace’s father and brother when they dared to speak out against him. After King Alexander III died without heirs, it's been a dark time to be a Scot. Even here, you half suspect the storytelling is still tongue-in-cheek.Grew up. Democracy is at risk and speeches are made about the threat to the American way of life. In its final reel, the film suddenly becomes more earnest. Strangely, given the film’s wisecracking approach, comedian Chris Rock (playing one of Harold and Burt’s old comrades) gets very little screen time. In one memorable scene, a character is pushed into the path of an oncoming vehicle and squashed and dismembered in very satisfactory fashion. The film is full of eccentric and entertaining character performances, but Russell is so busy providing funny shtick for his all-star cast that the tension quickly seeps out of the story. Her father, General Meekins, has died in murky circumstances and Dr Burt Berendsen ( Christian Bale, looking like a weather-beaten version of Leon Trotsky but sounding like Al Pacino) carries out an autopsy together with nurse Irma St Clair (Zoe Saldana). Pop star Taylor Swift acquits herself well in a cameo as haughty but glamorous New York socialite Elizabeth Meekins, who sets the main part of a very convoluted plot in motion. It is funny, gloriously shot and acted with great zest – but the director’s light-hearted approach is often jarring. The material is dark, but this is a high-spirited screwball romp. His main characters are war veterans still carrying physical and mental scars. The writer-director is drawing on the fascinating real-life story of how, in 1933, right-wing, fascist-leaning American businessmen plotted a coup against President Roosevelt. It is hard to tell whether David O Russell ( American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook) is being brave or foolhardy with Amsterdam.
